Discover the Power of Listening: Beginning to Hear God’s Voice – Part One
Anyone Can Learn to Hear the Voice of God.
Have you ever asked yourself how to hear the voice of God? Do you feel like you are missing out on a deep and important aspect of your faith journey? Well, the truth is that anyone can learn to hear the voice of God, it just takes practice and patience.
The first thing to remember is that God desires to communicate with us. He created us to be in relationship with Him, and that relationship includes communication. However, it is important to recognize that God’s voice can come in many forms, and it is up to us to learn to discern His voice.
The first, and I think the most important step to hear God’s voice is through prayer and spending time in His Word. This allows us to develop a deeper relationship with who He is and how he communicated with those who followed Him, which in turn prepares us to hear His voice.
Examples In Scripture …
There are many, many examples in scripture of men and women who heard God’s voice by developing a relationship with him. Here are just a few …..
In Acts 11:12, Peter hears the still small voice of the Lord, instructing him not to discriminate against the gentiles and to baptize a group of them. In Acts 13:2, the Holy Spirit speaks to the prophets and teachers in Antioch, guiding them to set apart Barnabas and Saul for a special work.
Similarly, in Acts 16:6-7, Paul and his companions are prevented by the Holy Spirit from traveling to Asia, instead being directed towards Macedonia. This decision ultimately leads to the founding of several new churches.
But perhaps one of the most well-known examples of hearing the still small voice of God comes from 1 Kings 19:12. Elijah is in despair, on the run from Jezebel, when he finally encounters God. But rather than speaking in thunder and lightning, the Lord speaks to Elijah in a gentle whisper.
Finally, in Isaiah 30:19-21, we are encouraged to listen for God’s guidance and follow His voice. For it is in listening to Him that we will find true rest and security.
This is just the start to having an incredible relationship with God. Stay tuned as I go deeper into ways that you can meditate with him to hear his voice for yourself!
