Christmas to me is a sort of magical time of year. I especially like driving around and looking at the lights. They are so festive and turn the ordinary night into a magical display of light and color. It was on such a night as this that my singing partner and I were driving around in the north Georgia mountains, Christmas songs blaring and taking in all the beauty of the season.
The usual songs were playing. The classics like Rudolf, The Chestnuts song, and of course Ray Charles. There were plenty of songs about Tennessee Christmas, New York Christmas, Alabama Christmas, and other places, but not a single one about a Christmas in Georgia.
That really stirred the songwriter in me. I thought .. “How come nobody ever wrote a song about a Christmas in Georgia”? Then the next thing I said was .. “Well, I’ll just have to write one”!
That’s how the song Christmas in Georgia was born.
I decided to make it about the season of Christmas and the anticipation of seeing a sweetheart. In fact, most of the music on this album is about the season of Christmas .. the sights, scents, smells, and feelings.
Nothing in my opinion could take the star away from the star of the season … Jesus. His light shines brighter than any twinkling Christmas light ever could. He fills my life with more purpose than any song I could ever write about the season. But I think He is just fine with us celebrating and enjoying the season. He is certainly not in any competition with it all.
When He was born there were no twinkling lights or fanfare. Just a stable and a manger with the King of Kings and the very seed of God lying in it. That seed grew into the Son of God that changed the whole world. He put a seed in you too that can change the world around you too! He put a desire for something greater than this life and to be something greater.
Just like there was no song representing my beloved home state until I wrote it, there is something important in your world too that can’t be done except by you. The world is waiting. Your world around you. Your sphere of influence that needs your special touch.
“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” — Ephesians 2:10
Lord, thank You for creating me for good works that You prepared beforehand — a song, a gift, a calling that’s mine alone to carry. Help me not to wait for permission or for someone else to do it first. Like Esther, let me believe I was made for such a time as this. Show me my sphere of influence, and give me the courage to fill the gap only I can fill. Amen.
