Words Have Power!

Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.

Proverbs 18:21

God spoke and the whole world was created. Creation is in the power of the tongue. God gave you the same power to create with your words. This is not just new-age gobbledygook. It’s about the intention of the heart and physical words that come out of your mouth.

God set up a system of sowing and reaping. Just take a look in your backyard. All of the trees, grass, and flowers out there all came from one seed of its kind. The seed was sown into the ground. One tiny seed produced that giant pine you see. That one seed’s harvest, or reaping, produces millions of seeds every season.

This is God’s law of sowing and reaping. Everything starts with a seed. All of life starts with a seed. Ideas and thoughts are seeds as well. Just like trees can produce good fruit, they can also produce bad fruit. There are good thoughts in your mind, and there are bad thoughts in your mind. Good thoughts produce good things. Bad thoughts produce bad things. Get the picture?

Now, let’s move on to the actions you take with those thoughts.

The Tongue

Proverbs 18:20-21 From the fruit of his mouth a man’s belly is filled; with the harvest from his lips, he is satisfied. 21Life and death are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.

Notice that the word harvest is used in conjunction with a man’s lips. The picture I get from this verse is of a man who is wealthy. I’m seeing a man who used his mouth to plant seeds of wealth.

The tongue can be used to lift up and encourage, or it can be used to tear down and destroy.

Psalm 64:3 They sharpen their tongues like swords and aim cruel words like deadly arrows.

When you were a child you no doubt hear the phrase; Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never harm me.

I have to be honest. I was picked on a teased as a child because I was overweight. I wore glasses too. I was called 4 eyes and told by my father that I was fat. Name-calling and negativity were a daily occurrence in my home. This built up a huge sense of poor self-esteem inside of me. As a child, I didn’t have the skills to fight off these words. I still have days as an adult when I have to battle with low self-esteem. I’m learning to turn negative thoughts into positive ones. I’m tearing down the old trees of bad fruit spoken over me with new seeds! See my Stop Negative Thoughts 3 day challenge here.

The Good News

The good news is that you can reverse the words that have been spoken over you. You can stop speaking bad words over other people. I don’t know about you, but I want to be a giver of life instead of death. Practice speaking words of love and encouragement over yourself daily. Replace those things that were said over you.
