“Atlanta native Marjorie Whitley is an accomplished singer-songwriter whose music weaves together the soul-stirring heart of Christian faith with the poetic sensibilities of folk rock.”
Music has always been my greatest passion. When I was a young girl I spent many hours a day just listening to music on my little record player. It wasn’t just the sound of the music that drew me in. It was the lyrics as well. I remember contemplating the meanings of lyrics to songs going back to my kindergarten days. Songs like Burt Bacharach’s “Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head” and “El Condor Pasa” by Simon and Garfunkel.
Those were the days of the great folk rock invasion. I loved the sound of the acoustic guitar and couldn’t wait to get one and learn to play all those songs. It was also a time before the internet, so if you wanted to learn to play a song that was on the radio, you either had to have the sheet music, or you had to pick out the chords for yourself. I was in the latter camp. Buying sheet music was kind of expensive for a little kid and the arrangements were often wrong, so I would sit down in front of my record player and try to pick out the chords. I didn’t know it at the time, but that was great ear training, and it taught me about song structure.
So, it’s no surprise that the songs I write even to this day are acoustic singer songwriter style just like my folk heroes of my childhood. I’ve developed my own style now but I’m sure you can hear some of those influences still lurking around in my music .. some of those influences are The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel and later artists like Alanis Morissette, Sheryl Crow, and a little Jni Mitchel.
I enjoy writing worship songs for my church, but my favorite passion is writing Christian singer songwriter songs that reflect the times of the season or brining God into every day life.
Over the years, my heart and the things that I write about have shifted considerably. It’s all about God and my journey with Him that gets my songwriting juices flowing. That’s not to say that I don’t enjoy a good song about relationships and other life struggles. You can find all of that in the music I’ve written over the years.
The really exciting thing for me though is when God flows through me in the prophetic. I’ve written many songs with Him as my co-writer. And my full album Angel Wings is a total collaboration of our hearts. Read about the making of that album here …
Please have a listen to some of the songs that I’ve written over the years. Each one tells a little story of my journey in life, and with God. You may find your life in these songs as well ..
