Seems like every year I’m bombarded with these thoughts about the crazy combinations of the baby Jesus being born on December 25th, which he clearly was not, and all the weird Pagan traditions that are mixed into this season. Don’t get me wrong, I like the season and I enjoy the decorations. I love looking at the lights and even the silly little children’s Christmas movies that I watched as a child and still watch every year.
But this year for some reason the Pagan aspect of things was really bugging me.
I think we all know the origins of a lot of these traditions and how the Roman church infused the birth of Christ into the middle of all the pagan rituals and such, so I won’t go into all of that.
Instead of getting caught up on everything that’s wrong with celebrating Christmas, I decided to ask the Lord what HE thought about it all and how he felt about what we are doing here celebrating Chrstmas?
I was really surprised at his answer and totally blessed by it too. I think you will be too ..
Am I upset that people celebrate Christmas? No. Parties and celebrations are a good thing. That they want to center it around highlighting the works and miracles of God is another good thing.
I am not challenged by Santa. I don’t feel in competition with Santa. I’m not in competition with Rudolf either. Those are childhood things that children grow out of. Its only something that lasts a brief while. Holly trees are just holly trees. They hold no religious meaning anymore. They are just decoration. This season marks the end of the year and a fresh look at the year to come. May calendar is meant for something else entirely. The Greco calendar does not negate my calendar.
I still know what time it is.
I am not threatened by Father Time either. Father Time is just an expression. Nobody considers it a real entity anymore. When I died on the cross I defeated all of those pagan gods. I took all their power away. All of the gods who are woven into these traditions no longer have power. The fact that they are reduced to myths and fairy tales is a testament to how powerless they are.
The early Roman church was surrounded by these myths and gods and wanted to get the people away from worshiping them and to worshiping me. Was it perfect? No. It was very flesh driven. But the heart was in the right place. I know that my people are not perfect and the did not have the ability to stop worshiping idols.
That is where my grace comes in. That is why I stand between you and God almighty. I have forgiven the world for their sins yesterday and today and tomorrow. I know sin will happen every single day. It is impossible not to sin. The atonement of sin is what was difficult as well.
God set things up so that atonement was possible. That was difficult too. Following the law was an impossible task. God has to have boundaries and rules to abide in. He needs purity and no one on this earth could come close to the level of purity needed to keep God in the forefront. That is why he set up the ultimate sacrifice. So that man could go on living. So that life could continue.
I know there are groups out there that still celebrate the solstice and engage in paganism. The point is that Jesus defeated all of them .. even if people are still giving power to them, they are defeated! If the church only knew how to stand up to these demonic “gods” like Elijah did the world would be a totally different place!
