Embracing Your Calling as a Spiritual Mother: A Devotional for Women of Faith

What is a mother? The nature of a mother is to soothe, to nurture, to protect, to encourage, and to love. A mother sees the potential in those who are like tender babies in the early stages of development. This can be in regard to anything—whether or not these babies came from her womb or are given to her from the Spirit of God.

To be a spiritual mom is to see the potential fruit in someone, or many, who are just starting out in their calling in life. These are special women that God places all around to bring out the gifts and callings of His children that He places in their path, to point them and help them grow in the spiritual things of God.

“Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you.” (Isaiah 49:15)

I have never given birth physically. I don’t know what it’s like to raise a child from birth, day in and day out. But with my years as a nanny, and 20+ years as a childcare teacher and babysitter, I know what it’s like to love a child, watch it grow, and see the gifts that God placed in them—and do my part to nurture those gifts.

“We were gentle among you, like a nursing mother caring for her children. We loved you so much that we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well.” (1 Thessalonians 2:7–8)

And now, as I’m entering my 60s, there are so many young men and women that God has put in my path that are just starting out on their journey with Him. Some of them don’t have natural parents who have a deep connection with Him. This is where God needs His spiritual moms to step in.

“My dear children, for whom I am again in the pains of childbirth until Christ is formed in you.” (Galatians 4:19)

If God is putting young people, or even adults who are just born into the kingdom, in your path, He may be calling you to be a spiritual mother. Take a minute to reflect and pray about this and see where God leads you.

Scripture Section

Titus 2:3–5 — “Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live… Then they can urge the younger women to love their husbands and children…”

Devotional — A Word From The Lord

My dear child. I have loved you from your mother’s womb. I have nurtured you and loved you and watched you grow. Now you are grown and carry my heart within you. You see the pain and sickness all around and wonder what can be done. I tell you that much can be done. As my arms and legs, I can use you to reach out and touch those that are all around you. It is your hands and feet that do the walking for me. I need you in this hour to love and nurture the little ones in your path. Seek me for guidance in how to do that, as each little one is different. Each heart is special and needs a special touch. I have put ones in front of you that need your special touch. You will know what to do when you see them. No need to fear. A simple, gentle touch is all it takes to love them back to me.

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father. Thank you for all that you have given me. I thank you, God, that I can see clearly the path I have walked, and I am honored that you are putting your young ones in my path. I thank you for giving me wisdom to know what to say and how to move them in the season they are in. Thank you that I don’t have to do this in my own strength, that you will be with me giving me wisdom and the words to say. I give you permission this day to use me to reach the lost and the searching and the young ones that you set before me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
